Unlock more mysteries behind the Shadow

Amnesia: Rebirth is an adventure video game wherein you must survive the harsh desert and uncover the memories you’ve lost. Developed by Frictional Games, this 3D survival horror game is the third installment in the Amnesia game series and the direct sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

In Amnesia: Rebirth, you once again play in first-person perspective and must solve numerous puzzles, explore dangerous locations, and fight against the fear that’s constantly threatening to overwhelm your character. Unlike the previous games, however, you don’t need to worry about reloading back to a previous point when you get killed.

How long does Amnesia: Rebirth last?

The story of Amnesia: Rebirth revolves around the sudden isolation and memory loss of Anastasie “Tasi” Trianon, a French archaeologist who had been on an expedition to Africa. She finds herself in a plane crash and all of her companions missing, as well as her husband Salim. Using her wits, she must venture further into the dark depths of the desert’s caverns and confront the strange memories slowly coming back.

Similar to the first game, your character can’t remember the events leading up to their first starting point. Thus, exploration is key to understanding the plot and progressing through the game. This also helps in figuring out the various puzzles you’ll encounter. Aside from that, you can’t fight against dangerous creatures again so you must either run or hide. This is on top of managing your limited resources, too.

You also have to calm Tasi down whenever her fear level rises and she starts hallucinating. However, if you’d like less horror, you can enable Adventure Mode. Additionally, when you get killed by enemies, the game reloads you a bit further into the story—allowing you to bypass that same enemy. This sadly downplays the game’s atmospheric horror elements, though, and makes the 8 - 9 hours of gameplay a bit tedious.

Loss is more than poignant

All in all, Amnesia: Rebirth is a nice sequel that directly references the events of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. However, its horror elements can feel forced and awkward at times as there’s no real fail state for you to worry about when you botch up enemy encounters. Story-wise, though, the game establishes a gripping plot as you try to help Tasi investigate the truth about her and her companions’ fates.

PROS

  • A direct sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent
  • First-person atmospheric horror experience
  • Resource management and no-combat gameplay
  • Adventure Mode makes the game less scary

CONS

  • The game can be too forgiving compared to the previous games
